Based on its shape
pipe bone, contains yellow marrow
ex: humerus, femur, fibula, phalanx
short bone, contains red marrow
ex: segments of backbone, carpus, and tarsus
flat bone, contains red marrow
ex: scapula, sternum, and ribs
